We enjoyed a fantastic UK Parliament Week at Cheadle Hulme Primary School last week, learning all about the workings of parliament and the importance of democracy.

The children wrote and shared pledges about a number of issues that are important to them before joining in lively debates with their classmates. Some even wrote letters to MPs to make their views known, many taking inspiration from COP26 and our duty to act now to improve the state of the planet for future generations.

It has been wonderful to see all our pupils so engaged in sharing their opinions and learning how to express their ideas and thoughts, to make a difference to the world around them at both a local and global level.

This all links to our work towards becoming a UNICEF Rights Respecting School and during Parliament Week UK we have been reflecting with the children on our pledge to ensure that ‘all children have the right to have their views respected’.

As part of this commitment we have also formed our newly elected Pupil Parliament, with children across the school voted into ‘office’ to represent their classmates and friends on a variety of issues. The Cheadle Hulme Primary School Pupil Parliament consists of a number of different departments:

• Ministry of Justice (Right Respecting Steering Group)
• Home Office (House Captains)
• Department for Education
• Department for Sport
• Department for the Environment

The children involved will meet on a regular basis to listen to and act on the views of their peers to bring about positive change within our immediate school environment and local community as well. We can’t wait to see what they come up with and look forward to sharing their progress with you throughout the year.
