Summer Term in Year 3
The inspirational texts on our bookshelf will inspire our learning across the curriculum.

Summer Bookshelf
Over the course of the summer term, we will use the selected texts to produce a range of genres in our writing lesson linked to our character traits: a non- chronological report, a book review, a setting description, a narrative and a letter.

Linked to our History topic, children will become historians as they research and write non‑chronological reports about the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians. They will learn how to organise facts clearly using headings, paragraphs and exciting historical vocabulary.
Through the imaginative story The Tin Forest, pupils will explore powerful themes and express their own opinions. They will write thoughtful book reviews, explaining what they liked and why, while developing confidence in discussing texts.
Children will step into a magical world as they write vivid setting descriptions inspired by Leon and the Place Between. They will use rich language, similes and senses to bring mysterious settings to life for the reader.
Inspired by the playful story The Paper Caper, pupils will write their own narratives focusing on direct speech. They will practise punctuating dialogue correctly while creating engaging characters and exciting action.
After reading Tidy, children will write persuasive letters about caring for the environment. They will learn how to express their views clearly and passionately, encouraging others to look after the world around them.
As a class, we will enjoy the thrilling novel The Great Bank Heist, linking our reading and writing to real‑life work with the Chelwood Food Bank Centre. This unit will inspire meaningful discussions, empathy and purposeful writing connected to our local community.
Summer Learning at a Glance
In Maths, we will be covering fractions, money, time, shape and statistics, whilst also calling upon previously taught arithmetic skills and methods to solve problems.
We will use what we know as well as discovering more about Ancient Egypt in our History lessons to answer the end question: Why were the Ancient Egyptians so GREAT?
In Geography, we will answer the question: What does data tell us about Europe? This will draw on previous Geography units covering place, population and analysing data. Our work in Art over the term will see us explore Phillip Treacy and build up the previously taught skill of sculptures from Year 1.
In RE, we will be answering the question: What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?
In PE, we will take to the field for athletics, and we will begin our first swimming lessons.
