Summer Term in Year 5
The inspirational texts on our bookshelf will inspire our learning across the curriculum.

Our learning this term will be underpinned by our summer bookshelf; filled with inspiring and engaging texts to spark our imaginations and teach us the many different ways people and characters can demonstrate bravery, kindness, curiosity, gratitude, citizenship and integrity.
Summer Bookshelf
The books on our Summer bookshelf include non-fiction and information texts, picture books, narratives and novels.

‘The Last Bear’ is a narrative text about a girl who builds a friendship with a loan polar bear. The novel touches on themes of environmental activism, the connection between humans and animals, and the courage it takes to make a difference in the world.
‘The Lost Words’ is a beautifully illustrated poetry book that explores the relationship between language and nature. It was created in response to the removal of nature-related words, like “acorn,” “bluebell,” and “kingfisher,” from a popular children’s dictionary. The book seeks to reclaim these words and reconnect readers with the natural world.
‘The Arrival’ is a book of wordless images that tells the story of a migrant’s journey to a strange and unfamiliar land. Through stunning illustrations, the book captures the emotions and challenges of leaving one’s home and adapting to a new environment.
‘The Nowhere Emporium’ is a magical adventure about a mysterious shop that appears and disappears without warning. When young Daniel Holmes stumbles inside, he discovers a world filled with enchanted rooms, impossible wonders, and secrets waiting to be uncovered. The Emporium is powered by imagination itself, but it is also threatened by dark forces from its past. As Daniel becomes part of its story, he must find courage he never knew he had.
‘Incredible Journeys’ is a non-fiction book that explores remarkable adventures and explorations around the world. Levison Wood is a British adventurer, author, and photographer, and in this book, he recounts some of his most daring and life-changing journeys.
Summer Learning at a Glance
In Geography, we will be looking at six-figure grid references and how they are used to navigate.
In Maths, we will build on our previous term’s learning and embedding our number skills through the topics of: Shape, Position and Direction, Negative numbers and Converting Units.
In Science, we will be completing three units of work: ‘Life Cycles’, ‘Reproduction’ and ‘Reversible and Irreversible Changes’. We will build on what we know from learning in previous years. We will discover the life cycles and life processes of both animals and plants as well as exploring how some changes can be reversed, such as dissolving, and other cannot, such as burning.
In History, we will be learning about the Industrial Revolution and answering the question ‘How did industrialisation change life for the people of Manchester?’
