Summer Term in Year 6
The inspirational texts on our bookshelf will inspire our learning across the curriculum.
During Summer Term in Year 6, we will read a variety of inspirational texts where we will explore the character traits of kindness, citizenship, integrity, curiosity, bravery and gratitude.

Summer Bookshelf

In our first text – When the Sky Falls – we will explore a story following an evacuee and his experiences in a new school (a new, unexpected setting) where they develop their own integrity. When reading The Final Year, we aspire to write a leaflet for the current Year 5s explaining what they will experience in life during Year 6, which will naturally cover all of our character traits. Through the powerful picture book The Viewer by Gary Crew, our pupils will explore and reflect on the character traits. As they encounter the mysterious viewing machine, curiosity is sparked through questioning the origins of objects and the stories they carry across time. The narrative also supports citizenship, prompting discussion about our role in preserving history and caring for our shared world. Through the inspiring picture book Suffragette: The Battle for Equality by David Roberts, pupils explore important character traits through the real‑life struggle for fairness and equality. Gratitude is developed as pupils recognise and appreciate the sacrifices made by those who fought for the rights we enjoy today.
Our science topic is adaptation. In History and Geography, we will be investigating key turning points in British history and comparing the human geography between the Bahamas and Wales. In Art, we will be studying the work of famous animation studios to create our own drawings, sculptures and digital animations.

Important Information
- Children will come into school on their PE kit on their PE days (Monday and Friday).
- Please make sure your child’s book bag containing their reading books and reading record is brought into school every day.
- Reading books will be changed as the children finish their book.
- In UKS2, we encourage children to read independently at home and sign their own reading record. Parents and carers can then monitor this weekly to ensure children are reading as much as possible. You know your child best and if you would like to sign their reading record, please do this.
- Home Learning will include daily reading, weekly spellings, a variety of SATs revision during Summer 1 and wider curriculum coverage during Summer 2.
- Your child’s class teacher will be available every day before and after school to receive messages, celebrate successes and discuss answer any questions.
As always, there will be lots of learning and exciting activities going on in Year 6 this term!
