Spring Term in Year 1

Spring Bookshelf

We are looking forward to exploring our Spring Bookshelf and learning how the characters in the stories inspire bravery, promote kindness, and nurture curiosity within our world. The books chosen link to our school character traits, promoting the importance of integrity and kindness, encouraging our children to be honest and work well together.

Through tales of courage, resilience, and overcoming obstacles, these books help to teach the children about the world we live in and equips them with the necessary skills to thrive throughout their school journey.

Spring Learning at a Glance

Within our English learning, we will continue to develop our story writing skills by embedding our knowledge of simple sentence structure and trying to include setting and character descriptions. We will continue to practise writing from different points of view, for example writing diary entries, non- chronological reports and instructions. We will also be exploring poetry to coincide with World Poetry Day.

In Science we will explore our new topic on Animals, where we will work scientifically to identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

In Maths, we will begin to learn about place value within 20 and how to use a number line to 20, building on the knowledge we learnt in the Autumn Term.

Within our History lessons in Spring 2, we will work towards answering our endpoint question of ‘How and why has air transport changed over time?’. We will be heading to Manchester Airport to participate in an interactive tour where we will also have the opportunity to board real aircraft and discuss our end point question.

Important Information

  • Children are to wear their PE kit to school on a Monday and Thursday.
  • Please make sure your child’s book bag containing their reading books and reading record is brought into school every day.   
  • Reading books will be changed weekly.
  • Please continue to sign your child’s reading record book daily. 
  • Home Learning will include daily reading, weekly spellings, and a maths or SPAG task each week.  
  • Your Child’s class teacher will be available every day before and after school to receive messages, celebrate successes and answer any questions.

As always, there will be lots of learning and exciting activities going on in Year 1 this term!
