Welcome to Year 3

Summer Term in Year 3

The inspirational texts on our bookshelf will inspire our learning across the curriculum.

Over the course of the Summer term, we will use the selected texts to produce a range of genres in our writing lesson linked to our character traits: a non- chronological report, a book review, a setting description, a narrative and a persuasive letter.

We will be continuing our study of Ancient Egypt in history, and will use the knowledge we have built to create a non-chronological report. We will then look at a text called ‘The Suitcase’, which is a short story about a creature who relocates and is initially met with conflict by the neighbouring animals but they grow to look out for each other. This links brilliantly with our themes on integrity and citizenship. We will then be using ‘Leon and the place between’ to inspire curiosity and write a setting description. We will be delving into the character trait of citizenship through our exploration of the text ‘Tidy’ before writing a persuasive letter linked to looking after the environment. We also have two exciting class novels ‘The Legend of Podkin One-Ear’ and ‘The Accidental Rock Star.’

In Maths, we will be covering fractions, money, time, shape and statistics, whilst also calling upon previously taught arithmetic skills and methods to solve problems.

We will use what we know as well as discovering more about Ancient Egypt in our History lessons to answer the end question: Why were the Ancient Egyptians so GREAT?

In Geography, we will answer the question: What does data tell us about Europe? This will draw on previous Geography units covering place, population and analysing data.

Our work in Art over the term will see us explore Phillip Treacy and build up the previously taught skill of sculptures from Year 1.

In RE, we will be answering the question: What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?

In PE, we will take to the field for athletics, and we will begin our first swimming lessons.

Important Information

  • Please make sure your child’s book bag or backpack containing their reading books and reading record is brought into school every day
  • Home Learning alternates between Maths/Arithmetic and English/Reading Comprehension and should be completed in your child’s Home Learning book. These are sent home on a Friday and are to be handed in on a Wednesday.
  • Other online platforms are available for the children to use either as part of the weekly Home Learning or as additional resources to further embed learning done in school. In Year 3, this includes Spelling Shed and Times Tables Rockstars. Logins can be found in the front of the children’s Reading Records.
  • A spelling quiz will be held every Friday.
  • Pupils in Year 3 wear their PE kits in place of regular school uniform on their PE day.
  • Government-funded fruit is not provided for KS2 children. We would encourage you to send a simple, fruit or bread-based snack in for your child to eat during morning break. The following snack choices are allowed: a piece of fruit, raw vegetable sticks, dried fruit or a plain breaded snack. Products containing chocolate are not permitted, nor are products containing nuts.
  • When the children begin Year 3, they no longer receive the Universal Infant Free School Meals entitlement. School lunches are available to be purchased every day, or you are welcome to send your child in with a packed lunch (please remember nothing in these should include nuts). Parents struggling to meet the cost of school lunches may still be entitled to Free School Meals (FSM) – further details about this can be found here.
  • Year 3 pupils use lockers, where they can keep their coat and bag.
  • A member of the Lower Key Stage Two (LKS2) Team will be available every morning and at the end of every school day. For conversations that may require more time or privacy, please arrange an appointment.

As always, there will be lots of learning and exciting activities going on in Year 3 this term!
