Welcome to Year 3

Autumn Term in Year 3

The inspirational texts on our bookshelf will inspire our learning across the curriculum.

Over the course of the Autumn term, we will use the selected texts to produce a range of genres in our writing lesson linked to our character traits: character description, poetry, narrative retell, non-chronological report, instructions and a balanced argument.

We will read a variety of carefully selected and inspirational texts that explore the character traits of kindness, citizenship, integrity, curiosity, bravery and gratitude. We will begin with ‘The BFG’ by Roald Dahl which provides a brilliant opportunity to discuss bravery, citizenship and curiosity. With a “fee-fi-fo-fum” we will then delve into ‘Jack and the Baked Beanstalk’ where we will discuss the integrity of the Giant. Throughout the rest of the term, we will link our History learning with ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ and discuss the kindness and gratitude of Cindy-Lou and debate the integrity of the Grinch through a balanced argument. During National Poetry Week we will create our own emotions poem inspired by ‘Say how you feel’ by Joseph Coelho!

In Maths, we will be covering Place Value, Addition and Subtraction and Multiplication and Division. We will draw upon previously taught arithmetic skills and methods to solve problems and deepen our mathematical thinking.

In History, we will be answering the end point question: How did Britain change during prehistory? We will explore change and continuity throughout this period and will continue to consolidate our knowledge and understanding of British, Local and world history.

Our Art work over the Autumn term will see us explore the artist Hokusai with a particular focus on the famous print ‘The Great Wave.’

In RE we will continue to develop our knowledge on the teachings and beliefs of a range of different religions and look at how this is represented in society across Great Britain.

Our Geography unit will enable us to acquire the knowledge and resources to answer our end point question: What are rivers and what do they provide us?
