Year 3

Spring Term in Year 3

The inspirational texts on our bookshelf will inspire our learning across the curriculum.
The Character Traits that underpin the curriculum at Cheadle Hulme Primary School with associated icons - bravery, citizenship, curiosity, gratitude, integrity and kindness.

Spring Bookshelf

Over the course of the Spring term, we will use the selected texts to produce a range of genres in our writing lesson linked to our character traits: Character in a setting description, narrative retell to entertain, informative letter, persuasive leaflet, narrative diary and a non-chronological report based on our history topics, the Ancient Egyptians.

We are looking forward to exploring our Spring Bookshelf and learning how the characters in the stories inspire bravery, cultivate curiosity, and celebrate the virtues that shape a better world. The books chosen highlight the importance of integrity and kindness, encouraging our children to act with honesty and empathy in every situation. They also illustrate the strength that comes from citizenship, both in standing up for what’s right and in fostering a sense of community. Through tales of courage and gratitude, these books remind us that even the smallest acts of goodness can spark meaningful change, and that by embracing these values, we all have the potential to make a difference.

Spring Learning at a Glance

In English, our learning will be inspired by a range of exciting texts. We will explore Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx to write a diary entry as if we were exploring Ancient Egypt! Then, we will jump into the Wild Robot by Peter Brown where we will think carefully about how the character interacts with the setting. Next, we will soar into the magical world of The Crow’s Tale, retelling this beautiful story in our own words and bringing the characters to life with vivid description. The Suitcase will inspire us to write a thoughtful letter, thinking about kindness and understanding. We’ll focus on making our writing creative and clear whilst exploring themes such as resilience and empathy. Finally, we will use the National Geographic’s Ancient Egypt book to write an exciting non-chronological report all about Ancient Egypt!

In Maths, we will be covering Mass and Capacity, Fractions, Length and Perimeter and Multiplication and Division. We will draw upon previously taught arithmetic skills and methods to solve problems and deepen our mathematical thinking.

In History, we will be answering the end point question: Why were the Ancient Egyptians so great? The children will develop the use of appropriate historical terms, asking and answering questions about change/cause, similarity/difference and significance throughout their study.

Our Artwork over the Spring term will see us explore the artist Pablo Picasso with a particular focus on the use of line, shape, colour and texture within a range of drawings.

In RE we will continue to develop our knowledge on the teachings and beliefs of a range of different religions. We will do so by answering the question why do people pray?

Our Geography unit will enable us to acquire the knowledge and resources to answer our end point question: What can we learn from different maps?

In PE, we will be practising the key skills of sending and receiving within netball and will practise our performance skills in dance.

In Science, we will be exploring the topics of Fossils, Soils and Light.
